What it is

Dermal filler restores or adds volume where the face has lost it, or shapes and defines the lips.

Natural is the whole point here. Filler is placed for balance with your face, starting subtle, so people notice you look rested, not that you had something done.

What people come in for

  • Lips that need volume, shape or definition
  • Lost volume in the face
  • Balance and symmetry

How it runs here

  • It starts with your skin analysis.
  • We talk through the look you want first, and we tell you if less would look better.
  • Done under our medical director, Dr. Hysa.

How filler works

Most dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a substance your skin already makes that holds on to water. Placed under the skin with a very fine needle or a blunt cannula, it adds volume exactly where it's placed: in the lips for shape or fullness, or in the face where volume has thinned with time.

Because it's a soft gel, it can be shaped during the appointment. That's where "natural" is decided: how much, where, and when to stop. Results usually last many months, and how long depends on the area and the product. Lips tend to fade sooner than cheeks.

What your visit looks like

Every plan here starts with a skin analysis and a health history, and our medical director, Viola Hysa, MD, oversees every client profile. Then we talk about the look you want, and we look at your face as a whole, not one feature on its own. Lips that suit your face beat lips copied from a photo.

We can numb the area first. Filler is placed slowly, in small amounts, and you see it in the mirror as we go. We'd rather you come back for a little more than leave with too much.

Who should wait

We'll usually ask you to wait, or we'll plan around it, if:

  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have a cold sore, infection or irritated skin in the area. If you get cold sores, tell us: lip filler can trigger one, and we can plan for it.
  • You have a big event coming up. Swelling and bruising can take several days to a week to settle, so leave room before photos.
  • You've had filler or a permanent implant in the same area before. Tell us what and when.

Before your appointment

  • Tell us about every medication and supplement you take, since some make bruising more likely. Never stop a prescribed medication without asking your doctor.
  • Bring a photo of a look you like if it helps, as a starting point, not a target.

After your appointment

  • Expect some swelling, usually most noticeable on the second day, and possibly bruising.
  • Skip strenuous exercise, saunas and very hot showers for a day or two.
  • Don't press or massage the area unless we tell you to.
  • You'll get your aftercare in writing. The result settles over about two weeks, and that's when it's fair to judge it.

Questions

Will it look natural?

That's the point of it. We start conservative and build, because you can always add, and it's harder to take away.

How many sessions will I need?

We'll tell you after your skin analysis, not before. It depends on your skin and what you want changed, and a number quoted before anyone's looked at you is a guess.

Can filler be dissolved?

Most hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme if needed. It's one reason we start conservative: small, careful amounts are easy to build on.

Will people be able to tell?

If it's done well, people notice you look rested or more balanced, not that you had something done. That's the whole idea of natural fillers.

How long does lip filler last?

Usually several months, and it varies with the product, the amount and your body. Lips move a lot, so they tend to fade sooner than other areas.

Start with a skin analysis

We look at your skin before we suggest anything. Then you get a plan written for you, and you decide what happens next.

Worried you'll be sold a package? You won't. The analysis tells us what your skin needs, and sometimes that's less than you came in for.
